The East Peoria City Council voted 4-1 Tuesday night, in favor of a 3% sales tax for recreational marijuana.
The council also voted to change the city’s zoning codes to define and permit cannabis facilities in the city’s commercial zones.
City Commissioner Michael Sutherland was the only person voting in opposition to the proposal.
East Peoria Leaders said, recreational marijuana could be sold at NuMed on Riverside Drive.
News partner 25-News reported, that the NuMed facility is currently one of 60 licensed medical marijuana dispensaries across the state.
The city will wait to see if the state picks NuMed to get one the 75 new licenses for recreational sales.
The ordinance also creates an opportunity for craft growers.
Craft growers are recognized as restaurants or night clubs in the Cannabis Regulation and Tax Act.
