LEWISTOWN, Ill. – Guilty but mentally ill.
That’s the verdict a jury in Fulton County reached on two charges of First-Degree Murder in three-and-a-half hours Wednesday in the case of Nathan Woodring.
Woodring is the rural Avon man who shot and killed Fulton County Sheriffs Deputy Troy Chisum, after Chisum responded to a domestic disturbance at Woodring’s home in late-June, 2019.
Our news partner 25 News reports Chisum’s family members could be seen crying and hugging outside the courtroom when the verdict was read. Woodring, himself, was reportedly emotionless.
Woodring’s attorneys argued their client was paranoid about law enforcement at the time of the shooting, but the prosecution argued his drug use caused that paranoia.
Woodring will be sentenced January 4, 2022.
