PEKIN, Ill. – The city of Pekin has approved a budget for its 2024 fiscal year.
25 News reports the nearly $90 million spending plan goes into effect on May 1st.
One local official described it as the “most complete budget seen in years.”
The budget will fund ten new positions in the city. The new jobs include an economic development director, a social worker for the police department, and an in-house city attorney. Two new staff members will also help bring building inspections back in-house.
Road construction projects are also part of the new budget. $5.5 million has been earmarked to repair Derby Street between 8th and 14th Streets. There’s also $8 million for the continuation of Court Street from Hilltop to Stadium.
One item the city council will discuss in the near future is cost of living pay increases for city staff.
