MORTON, Ill. – A local food bank is providing some much needed help for victims of Hurricane Idalia in Florida.
Midwest Food Bank is donating kits that include four days worth of food, along with cleaning and hygiene supplies as needed to affected people in Florida.
Executive Director Lisa Martin says they’re sending ten truckloads of the kits to Florida, with around 1,000 kits in each truck.
“We’re thankful that we have the resources and ability and the trucks that we’re able to help provide and support to those that have been affected by the storms,” Martin said.
Martin says the food bank is still taking donations, and adds that monetary donations can go further. She says they can turn a dollar into about $30 worth of food.
Martin says the kits of food and supplies can provide comfort in a time of need.
“It’s amazing how when you’ve been hit with such tragedy, just the basic need of food provides a lot for them in those scenarios,” Martin said.
Martin says the donations were requested by their disaster relief partner, the Salvation Army. She says they’re waiting to hear if their supplies are needed to help residents in Maui after the Hawaiian wildfires last month.
