COULTERVILLE, Ill. – Of all the things you expect to see around the Illinois State Capitol, elk might not be one of them.
Until now.
Authorities believe an elk is making its way through that part of the state after becoming lost.
That’s according to a number of media reports.
Officials in Bond County say the elk was first spotted near Coulterville, southeast of Saint Louis.
At last report, the elk had been seen near Sangchris Lake in Sangamon County, not far from Springfield.
Numerous hunters have sent deer camera photos of the elk to the authorities, especially after it eventually crossed Interstates 64 and 70.
They now expect the elk to be in a more rural area that would more likely keep it from harm.
If you see one, you should contact your local game warden.
According to media reports, the elk may have come from Missouri or another state, and whoever may have purchased the elk likely couldn’t adequately contain it.
