PEORIA, Ill. – The Peoria City/County Landfill Committee has approved a plan for GFL Environmental to build a transfer station, then a new landfill in about 10 years, in a six to one vote.
The landfill that currently serves the Peoria area is nearly full.
Peoria City Council and the Peoria County Board had already approved the agreement with GFL, meaning it moves forward.
Rick Fox was the only landfill committee member to vote against the plan, saying he’s against the 10-year delay in opening Landfill 3.
Other committee members think the transfer station is a good fit for the community.
“I think in the long run, it’s going to save them money. It’s going to extend the life of Landfill 3 because Landfill 3 is going to be ten years later before it gets opened, which means in all likelihood it will be 10 years later before it’s full and closed,” said Stephen Morris, chairman of the committee.
As part of the agreement with GFL, Peoria County and the landfill committee will each receive $300,000 to help them operate until the transfer station opens. GFL will also be required to hold hazardous waste collection events.
According to 25 News, the next steps are for lawyers to finalize the agreement and for GFL to begin construction.
“I would say we’re going to see some groundbreaking on the transfer station, the residents are going to see a little bit of change in where they take their garbage and their waste, and then eventually we’ll have more options in the future for them to take that,” said Josh Gabehart, the market leader for a firm that consults with the committee.
