EDWARDS, Ill. – College students from around the country are beginning a summer in Peoria through an internship with Big Yellow.
More than 600 students began their journey Tuesday with orientation at the Edwards Demonstration and Learning Center, which starts the 12-week program.
Senior Vice President Jamie Mineart says the students get hands-on experiences as they learn about the workings of the company, in fields such as engineering, accounting, and supply chains. She adds that it can lead to job opportunities for the students.
“It helps us fill the new skills and the new talent that we’re going to need to create the future in the next 100 years,” Mineart said.
Mineart says she’s an example of that, starting as an intern at 18 years old and having a 25 year career at Big Yellow.
One of this year’s interns is Isabella Wilson, a Bradley University student and Peoria Richwoods graduate, who’s studying computer science and user experience design.
“I’m super excited to be working on different simulations and doing front-end development with branding, super excited to learn some more skills in user-experience and user-research,” Wilson said.
Wilson says she is looking to use her coding skills to go into front-end development, with the hopes of having a career at CAT.
For Maggie Padgett of Atlanta, Georgia, a marketing and management student at Purdue University, she is using her internship to learn more about what she wants to do for a career.
“This is really helping me decide do I want to go corporate, like do I want to go a different direction, and it’s kinda helping me to see do I want to stay in marketing, do I want to go to the finance route,” Padgett said.
Padgett says she will be working in pricing during her internship.
