PEORIA, Ill. – Labor Day weekend means many more people will be out on Illinois’ roads and highways.
Illinois State Trooper Jayme Bufford says more traffic brings with it an increased risk of accidents too.
“The ISP has identified four traffic violations that either cause or significantly increase the severity of a crash. All of those are the ‘fatal four’. And, that would include driving under the influence, speeding, not wearing a seatbelt, and distracted driving,” Bufford says.
Bufford adds, if you plan on celebrating this holiday weekend with alcohol, don’t drink and drive. Get an Uber, taxi, or have a designated driver to get you home safely.
Another thing that the ISP wants to make everyone aware of is the ‘Move Over Law’.
“Please be aware of any activity that’s going on at the side of the road, or any vehicle with its hazard lights activated. Make sure you’re slowing down and moving over for those vehicles,” Bufford says.
Drivers in town and on the interstates should expect to see extra law enforcement through Labor Day on Monday.
