PEORIA, Ill. — Central Illinoisans are feeling their share of pain at the pump this holiday weekend, as gas prices surpassed five dollars in some parts of the River City.
As of Sunday, prices at the HyVee station near Peoria’s Shoppes at Grand Prairie started at $5.09 per gallon.
25 News spoke to people at the pump about how these prices are impacting their travel plans.
“When I go to work, it takes me 15-20 minutes to get to work – that is very strenuous,” Peoria resident Stephanie O’Conner said. “Basically, I’m just going home, store, work. That’s it.”
“It definitely hurts the wallet. We went out for breakfast before we came to get gas, so just to go out and get a meal and fill up your gas tank is over $100,” Washington resident Darren Smith said.
Triple A says the national average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gas is currently $4.61. Here in Illinois, the average price is $4.99. The average price in the Peoria-Pekin metro area is $4.81.
According to the Energy Information Administration, due to the recent rise in gas prices, the demand for gas nationwide is at its lowest level for this time of year since 2013.
