PEORIA, Ill. – We now know who won one of two cars that were to be given to deserving Peoria Public School students.
25 News reports one of the winners announced at the recent End of the School Year Bash is Jerqhari Turner, 17 — who, up to now, had been saving to buy a new car, but who had also been doing a lot of community service up to now.
“We’ve done…a canned food giveaway, a canned food drive, a winter clothing giveaway,” said Turner. “It gives me a purpose. I want to grow up and help people.”
Turner’s mother says he’s been volunteering in his church since he was eight.
Turner is one of two students to win the new car through a giveaway organized by Peoria Public School Board president Greg Wilson.
“Hopefully, he looks at it and says, ‘I remember when someone gave me a car. Let me help out here or there, and try and bless another student,’” said Wilson.
A second winner is expected to be announced in the coming weeks. The cars were donated.
