SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — If you ever thought there was any end in sight to all the road work, think again.
The Illinois Department of Transportation is rolling out details of a newer multi-year infrastructure investment program that is designed to allocate billions of state dollars toward highway reconstruction and other related projects over the next several years.
“This Multi-Year program will not just focus on roads and bridges, but shows how we plan to invest in transit, rail, airport and waterways over the next six years.”
The Governor’s Office said IDOT increased the investment in Illinois roads and bridges in the six-year program by $4 billion thanks to federal legislation approved in 2021.
Of the major elements in the program released Friday, $6.36 billion will go toward highway reconstruction and preservation, $6.4 billion for bridge improvements, $2.03 billion for strategic expansion, $2.48 billion for system support such as engineering and land acquisition, and $1.55 billion for safety and system modernizations.
This is all supported by the earlier approved multi-billion dollar Rebuild Illinois Program, credited as one of the largest infrastructure investment programs in the state’s history.
