SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – Starting Friday, the time you spend at a DMV in Illinois could be decreased.
The state’s new “Skip the Line” program begins today. It makes the 44 busiest DMVs in Illinois, including locations in Peoria and Pekin, appointment only for services such as driver’s tests, obtaining a driver’s license or I.D. card, or obtaining a Real ID.
Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias says the program is about trying to save people time.
“In the past, when a customer had a visit to the DMV, it was impossible to know how long they would be stuck waiting in line,” Giannoulias said. “They would need to consider if they would need to take time off work, get a babysitter, or even how much coffee would be required to stay awake during their wait.”
In addition, all other DMVs in the state will have extended hours from Monday to Friday, 8:00 A.M. to 5:30 P.M. 15 facilities will be open six days a week, including a half day on Saturdays.
Giannoulias says people should also take care of services online that are available to them, such as renewing license plate stickers.
