SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – Jobs are up in the Peoria-metro area, but so is the unemployment rate.
The latest report released Thursday by the Illinois Department of Employment Security showed the metro area’s unemployment rate increased 0.3% from February 2023 to February of this year to 5.8%.
The city of Peoria saw a 0.7% increase in the same timeframe to 6.4%, while the city of Pekin’s rate went up 0.6% to 6%.
Counties in the Peoria-metro area also saw slight increases. Peoria County’s rate in the past year increased 0.4% to 6.3%, Tazewell County went up 0.2% to 5.3%, and Woodford County’s rate increased 0.2% to 4.6%.
The Peoria-metro area saw 1,200 non-farm payroll jobs added from February 2023 to February of this year, to around 168,300. The biggest increase was seen in the Government sector with 1,200 jobs. Other increases were seen in Educational-Health Services, Manufacturing, Wholesale Trade, and Financial Activities.
Job declines were seen in Professional-Business Services, Transportation-Warehousing-Utilities, Leisure-Hospitality, Retail Trade, and Information sectors.The statewide unemployment rate increased 0.6% from February 2023 to February 2024 to 5.3%, while the state added 22,900 to 6,035,800 non-farm payroll jobs.
