PEORIA, Ill. (25 News) – The Peoria community is grieving the death of Bishop Joseph Johnson, a beloved pastor and community leader who touched countless lives over nearly 60 years of service.
25 News reports that Johnson, the longtime pastor of Star of Hope Full Gospel Church, passed away peacefully Wednesday night at his home. He was 90.
Johnson only retired last year after dedicating his life to ministry and public service. He was known throughout Peoria for his compassion, generosity, and deep faith.
His impact on the community was remarkable. Johnson fostered 24 children during his lifetime and purchased more than a dozen homes and cars to give to those in need. He also ordained over 30 ministers.
As a young man, Johnson played a key role in integrating the Peoria County Courthouse, a significant milestone in the city’s civil rights history.
Beyond the pulpit, Johnson was admired for his warmth and hospitality. He often welcomed neighbors and church members into his home to share meals and fellowship.
Family and friends are remembering Johnson as a man with a giant heart and genuine spirit. Funeral arrangements are still being finalized.
