CHICAGO, Ill. – The state of Illinois is suing the Department of Homeland Security over what it alleges are “unlawful and dangerous” tactics during immigration enforcement operations.
The lawsuit filed Monday was brought by Governor J.B. Pritzker and Attorney General Kwame Raoul. It challenges the Trump administration for what it alleges are tactics used by ICE and Border Patrol that exceed authority granted by Congress.
A statement from the governor’s office claims that, since Operation Midway Blitz, agents have had an “abhorrent example of urban policing because of their lack of training and supervision.”
It also accuses DHS Secretary Kristi Noem and Customs and Border Protection head Gregory Bovino of failing to de-escalate situations.
“We have watched in horror as unchecked federal agents have aggressively assaulted and terrorized our communities and neighborhoods in Illinois, undermining Constitutional rights and threatening public safety,” Pritzker said.
The governor’s office also alleges that since their deployment in September, agents have killed one Illinois resident, shot another, and conducted a military-style raid on a Chicago apartment building.
