SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – Gas prices in the state of Illinois have climbed to a range of around $4.75 for regular unleaded.
While prices have spiked since the beginning of the conflict in Iran, the state still imposes a tax of nearly 50 cents per gallon.
According to the Department of Revenue, the gas tax in Illinois will increase from 49.6 to 66.6 cents per gallon on July 1st.
Peoria State Representative Ryan Spain has filed HB5738, calling for a 6-month gasoline sales tax holiday.
“We imposed a motor fuel tax across the state that was adjusted six years ago, seven years ago, in 2019. But, then we imposed a sales tax on top of that motor fuel tax. A tax on a tax,” Spain says.
Spain says the sales tax holiday benefits both people and the economy.
