TAZEWELL COUNTY, Ill. (25 News) – A woman is being held in the Tazewell County Jail for the shooting death of a man at a Creve Coeur home in March.
The suspect may be a police officer, but authorities have not confirmed that.
Jail records indicate Illinois State Police arrested Caitlynn J. Girkin, 27, for first-degree murder.
Authorities confirmed Girkin is a suspect in the killing of Adolfo Cazares, 29, who was found with a gunshot wound at a home in the 500 block of Roosevelt Road.
Creve Coeur Police responded after receiving a 911 call about 2:15 a.m. on Tuesday, March 10. First responders were said to have attempted life-saving measures, but Cazares was pronounced dead at the scene.
Tazewell County Coroner Charles Hanley said he determined the death to be a homicide.
Law enforcement officials have not confirmed that Girkin is a Creve Coeur Police Officer. However, the department posted on its Facebook page on Sept. 16, 2025, three photos showing Creve Coeur Police Chief Justin Egan and two others congratulating Girkin on becoming an officer.
Also, it’s common for local police departments to request that outside agencies investigate cases to prevent the appearance of a conflict of interest.
In this case, State Police said in a March 16 release that Creve Coeur’s department requested the ISP to handle the investigation.
