PEORIA, Ill. – Most of Central Illinois is under an Air Quality Alert through midnight on Monday.
With the current air quality in the 140 range, OSF HealthCare’s Dr. Bhagat Aulakh says everyone should stay indoors as much as possible.
For those with auto-immune deficiencies, it’s even more important to limit time outside.
“Now, if you start demonstrating symptoms, your airways are flaming up, you’re wheezing, coughing, or you’re feeling like you’re having respiratory symptoms, then you really need to try to get indoors,” Dr. Aulakh says.
Those with a history of breathing issues are advised to wear an N-95 mask if they must be outdoors for longer than 30 minutes. Young children and older adults should also limit their time outdoors.
Dr. Aulakh says air quality readings over 100 should be considered dangerous.
You can monitor the air quality in your area by going to AirNow.gov. The website can help identify periods of both poor and cleaner air quality regardless of the level of the daily 24-hour AQI forecast.
