PEORIA, Ill. – Peoria County prosecutors have used different provisions of the SAFE-T Act to keep a woman accused of stealing a police squad car in jail.
The Peoria County State’s Attorney’s Office says 30-year-old Britany Potter was charged Monday with Aggravated Unlawful Possession of a Stolen Motor Vehicle and Escape.
Those charges would typically not be detainable, but prosecutors used a provision of the SAFE-T Act that deals with defendants who willfully flee law enforcement.
Potter is accused of driving off in Bartonville Police squad car after being detained after a crash on Thursday, then fleeing into woods and eventually Peoria before her arrest.
Prosecutors say Potter reportedly told police she slipped out of her handcuffs, crawled through a partition between the front and back seats, and fled in the squad car because of active warrants for her arrest.
