PEORIA (25News Now) – Richard Pryor left Peoria decades ago to become one of the most influential comedians of all time.
Now, his hometown is welcoming him back.
The Peoria Riverfront Museum unveiled its new “PRYOR” exhibition Thursday, highlighting the life, career and lasting impact of one of Peoria’s most famous native sons. The exhibit is part of the museum’s Peoria Plays America series, which celebrates local figures whose influence reached far beyond Central Illinois.
The exhibition features photographs, memorabilia and a newly commissioned portrait by artist Felandus Thames.
For Thames, creating the artwork was more than a commission.
“It was a journey of connecting with my past,” he said, explaining that Richard Pryor was his father’s favorite comedian. Thames said he wanted to capture Pryor looking directly at viewers, encouraging them to reflect on the world around them, much like Pryor did throughout his career.
Museum leaders say Pryor’s willingness to tackle difficult conversations about race, family and society through comedy helped redefine stand-up and influenced generations of comedians who followed.
While Pryor traveled far beyond Central Illinois to find his audience, organizers say it’s fitting that his hometown is now celebrating the legacy he left behind.
The “PRYOR” exhibition opened to the public Thursday at the Peoria Riverfront Museum and will remain on display through the museum’s current exhibition season.
